Original Medicare A & B

Medicare is a health insurance program for people who are a) 65 or older and b) younger than 65 who have disabilities, end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant). Original Medicare has two parts: Part A, which is hospital insurance and covers inpatient hospital stays and certain home health care services; and Part B, which is medical insurance that covers doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive services.

To enroll in Original Medicare, call your local Medicare office or visit Medicare.gov.

Medicare Advantage Plans & More

Medicare Advantage plans allow you to choose a private health plan that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. The most common types of Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage plans offer prescription drug coverage.

You can also add Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, also known as Part D, for prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare and some Medicare Cost Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare.

Finally, you may want to consider Supplemental Medicare. This type of coverage helps pay some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover—like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You can choose to buy a Medigap policy from a private company.
